I’m from Kansas and have visited Big Brutus several times over the years. Raw numbers are interesting but to give its size perspective, the two little things just barely visible on the ground close to Brutus are a small (maybe 5 ton capacity shovel or crane and a D4 Caterpillar crawler tractor. In its last years of operation the electricity bill was something like $36,000.00 per month. Government regulations plus other costs vs the price of coal forced its shut down. The only larger shovel, The Captain, Marion 6360, was originally operated by Southwest Illinois Coal Company which later became Arch Coal, was over twice as heavy as Brutus at 28,000,000 pounds. It was operated until 1991 when it was gutted by fire and deemed to expensive to repair. There’s good fishing and hunting all around West Mineral on public land called the Mined Land Wildlife Area. Also a nice static railroad equipment display at nearby Scammon.

I live about 25 miles away, pretty nice toads for motorcycles all around the area. There is a pretty shady side to BRF, a certain population as gotten into hard drugs and the "fire water".

Suggest that you check out an interesting and historic Illinoiis town which my wife and I had the pleasure to live in for several years before i entered the Air Force. , Take a trip to Lebanon Illinois and step back in time on their main street and the Mermaid Inn . Charles Dickens stayed there on his travels in the United States. Take in a stage play at the Looking Glass Theater, established in 1973 and still going strong 51 years later. My wife was the first secretary on the board and I came in two years later. Well worth the trip. especially at Christmas when the downtown looks like something from a Currier and Ives drawing.

Most, not all(definitely not me) people of modern day are the most unfocused in denial freaks that I have ever seen. Life truly is what you focus on. Graffiti is art, petroglyphs are art, it’s all what you are able to focus your eyes and brain on. Yet these same freaks can look at polluted trash left all over the deserts, aka abandoned mines and towns that get glorified by these freaks as spectacular and beautiful, yet it’s all rusted, rotted, toxic trash strew all over and they just love it. Truly bizarre freaks of nature. Then on the same page, they will sign up and support the 3letter agencies that go around destroying every piece of free form American culture. Make sure that you are wearing your “obey” hat and don’t touch the rocks😂

Utah is an awesome place to visit. There are so many super cool land-before-time parks to see. You should make next year be in Utah. You could spend the winter in southern New Mexico and then head up to Utah in the spring. There's Bryce Canyon, Moab, Canyonlands, etc. While you are in southern New Mexico you could visit Carlsbad Caves and Grants has camping, a volcano, a cave, & mining.
